Table tennis is a popular indoor sport that can be played by people of all ages and skill levels. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive guide on the official rules of table tennis and how to play the game. Note: XPONG rules vary slightly.
Overview of Table Tennis
Table tennis is a game played on a table with a net dividing it into two halves. The objective of the game is to hit the ball over the net and onto the opponent’s side of the table without the opponent being able to return the ball. Points are scored when the opponent fails to return the ball or hits it out of bounds.
Equipment
To play table tennis, you will need a table, a net, two paddles, and a ball. The table should measure 9 feet long, 5 feet wide, and 2.5 feet high. The net should be 6 inches high and stretch across the entire width of the table. The paddles should be made of wood and rubber and measure no more than 6.7 inches wide and 10 inches long. The ball should be made of celluloid or similar plastic material and have a diameter of 40mm.
Official Rules of Table Tennis
Serving
The serve is the first shot of each rally and must be made from behind the baseline. The ball must be tossed at least six inches in the air before being struck and must land on the server’s side of the table before crossing the net. The server must hit the ball with the paddle and aim for the opponent’s side of the table. If the ball hits the net and lands on the opponent’s side of the table, the serve is considered a let and is replayed.
Scoring
Points are scored when the opponent fails to return the ball, hits it out of bounds, or fails to serve properly. Games are played to 11 points, and the winner must win by two points. Matches are typically best of five or seven games.
Service Order
At the start of each game, a coin toss is used to determine which player will serve first. The player who serves first in the first game will receive in the next game, and the service will alternate every two points until the end of the game. In subsequent games, the players will alternate the serve at the start of each game.
Double Bounce Rule
After the serve, the ball must bounce once on the server’s side of the table before being returned and once on the receiver’s side of the table before being returned again. After this, the ball can be volleyed without bouncing.
Faults
A fault is committed when a player fails to serve properly, fails to return the ball, hits the ball out of bounds, touches the table with their free hand, or touches the net with their paddle or body.
Table tennis is a fun and exciting sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. By following the official rules and practicing regularly, you can improve your game and enjoy the many benefits of this popular indoor sport.
